Co-Author – Institutional Settings, Sustainable Economic Growth and the Suzhou Crab Industry
Yangcheng Lake Crab, as a label of Suzhou, is the most famous crab brand in Suzhou’s crab industry. Based on Yangcheng Lake crabs, this paper reviews the development of Suzhou’s crab industry. In the early years, the industry developed slowly and the output was rather unstable. During 1980s to 1990s, the technological innovation of artificial breeding of crabs led to a dramatic growth of the industry. After then, the crab industry went through many challenges, one of which was counterfeits. To deal with the problems (what are the problems?) in the market and promote regulations, institutions are gradually established, including the foundation of Suzhou Yangcheng Lake Crab Association (SYLCA). SYLCA has been playing a crucial role in regulating the crab market, from innovatively developing anti-fake technologies to improving the quality of Yangcheng Lake crabs. Apart from that, Suzhou government also helps the sustainable growth of the crab industry by protecting the water in Yangcheng Lake. Although Suzhou’s crab industry develops rapidly, there are still many problems remaining to be solved, loose regulation of online trading included.

Institutional change is the spontaneous alternation process of pursuing potential opportunity of making profit in institution disequilibrium to turn the “external profits” to reality, it has huge effect on the development of cross-border e-commerce, especially in China, whose most industry development is policy-driven. This paper analyzes cross-border e-commerce from the perspective of institutional change to better understand the situation and environment of the development of domestic cross-border E-commerce, so as to help provide better policy recommendations for future development.
